Road Trip Packing List: Everything to Bring (and What to Rent)

The best road trip packing list starts with the car, not the clothes. Get the driving and safety kit right and everything else is just comfort. Here is what to bring, sorted so you can pack in one pass, plus the rental checklist that keeps you from overpacking or getting stung at the counter.

The car and safety kit

This is the part you cannot skip. Keep it in one bag you can reach from the front seat:

• Driver’s license, plus your booking and insurance details.
• A phone mount and a charger for every device, plus a spare cable.
• An offline map or downloaded route in case you lose signal.
• Water for everyone, refilled at every stop, and a day’s worth of snacks.
• A small emergency kit: first-aid box, flashlight or headlamp, a jump pack, and a basic tool.

Comfort and food

Long days in the seat are easier with a few small things:

• A cooler for drinks and lunch stops, which saves money over gas-station food.
• Sunglasses, a sun shade for the windshield, and layers for changing weather.
• A pillow and a blanket for passengers and rest stops.
• A trash bag and wet wipes, the two items everyone forgets.

Pack clothes light. Most trips need far less than you think, and a small load leaves room in the car.

Camper van extras

If you booked a camper, add a short list on top of the car kit. Most rental campers include the kitchen basics, so confirm the inventory first and avoid buying duplicates:

• Bedding and towels, unless the rental provides them.
• Water containers and a way to refill.
• Leveling blocks and a headlamp for setting up after dark.
• Campground reservations, booked ahead for popular parks.

The rental checklist

Do this five-minute check at pickup and you avoid most damage disputes:

• Photograph the car or van from every angle, including existing scratches and the wheels.
• Confirm the spare tire, jack, and warning triangle are present.
• Test the lights, wipers, and air conditioning before you drive off.
• Note the fuel policy so you return it correctly.
