Which gateway airport to fly into
Bozeman (BZN) is the busiest gateway and usually the cheapest to fly into, about 90 minutes from the West Entrance. Jackson Hole (JAC) puts you next to Grand Teton and the South Entrance but costs more. Fly into one and out of the other if you want to see both parks without backtracking.
What to rent
A standard SUV is the sweet spot: high enough clearance for gravel pullouts and service roads, big enough for luggage and a cooler, and available at every gateway. A camper van turns the trip into your accommodation — worth it in peak season when park lodges book out a year ahead.
The loop to drive
The Grand Loop Road is a figure-eight connecting the major basins and canyons. Plan a minimum of four days: Old Faithful and the geyser basins, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Lamar Valley for wildlife at dawn, and Mammoth Hot Springs in the north.
How many days you need
Three days is the rushed minimum; five is comfortable and leaves room for Grand Teton. Book the rental early — gateway fleets sell out in July and August, and one-way drop-offs between BZN and JAC carry a fee worth comparing.
