Do You Need a Car in Maui?

Yes — you need a car in Maui. There's almost no public transport, the best beaches and the Road to Hana are spread across the island, and rideshare is scarce and expensive outside the resort strip.

Short answer: yes, rent a car in Maui. This is the opposite of somewhere like Honolulu, where you can get by without one. Here’s why.

Public transport is minimal

The Maui Bus runs a handful of routes with limited hours and doesn’t reach most of the island’s highlights. It’s built for commuters, not visitors.

The island is spread out

Maui’s best beaches, the summit of Haleakala, upcountry towns, and the Road to Hana are scattered across the island. Getting between them by any means other than a car eats your whole trip.

Rideshare is scarce and pricey

Uber and Lyft exist around Kahului and the resort strip, but drivers thin out fast elsewhere, and surge pricing on airport runs is brutal. Relying on it costs more than a rental within a couple of days.

When you could skip it

If you’re staying put at a single resort for the whole trip and doing organized tours for any excursions, you can technically skip the car. Almost nobody’s Maui trip actually looks like that.

FAQ

Can you get around Maui without a car?

Barely. The Maui Bus covers limited routes and stops early, rideshare is thin outside Kahului and the resort areas, and the sights you came for — Hana, Haleakala, upcountry — aren't reachable without a car.

Do you need a car for the Road to Hana?

Yes, or a guided tour. The Road to Hana is a self-drive experience with dozens of pullouts; without your own vehicle you can't stop where you want or beat the crowds.
