Short answer: yes, rent a car in Kauai. This is not a walkable-resort island. The things you came for are scattered from one end to the other, and there’s no practical way to reach them without your own wheels.
Public transport barely exists
The Kauai Bus is a commuter service — limited routes, limited hours, and it skips the beaches, trailheads, and viewpoints visitors actually want. It is not a tourist system.
The island is spread out
Kauai’s highlights sit far apart:
- West — Waimea Canyon and Polihale.
- South — Poipu’s beaches.
- East — Wailua and the coconut coast.
- North — Hanalei, Ke’e Beach, and the Napali Coast trailhead.
Driving between them is the whole experience; there is no shortcut.
Rideshare won’t cut it
Uber and Lyft work around Lihue and Poipu but dry up fast elsewhere, and airport and north-shore runs get expensive. Over a few days it costs more than a rental and strands you when a driver won’t come.
