Do You Need a Car in Aruba?

It depends on your plans. Buses and taxis cover the resort strip and Oranjestad, but to reach Arikok National Park, the north coast, and the quiet beaches you'll want a car — many visitors rent for just a day or two.

Short answer: it depends how far you want to roam. Aruba’s resort strip is easy without a car; the wild side of the island isn’t. Here’s the split.

The resort strip works car-free

If your trip is Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, the pools, and dinner in Oranjestad, you don’t need a car. The Arubus runs a frequent line down the strip, taxis are everywhere, and many beaches are a short walk from the resorts.

Public transit

Arubus connects the high-rise hotels, the low-rise hotels, and downtown Oranjestad reliably. Beyond that corridor, though, service drops off and won’t get you to the far beaches or the park.

Driving in Aruba

Roads on the developed side are good and easy. The interior and north coast turn rough — for Arikok National Park and the natural pool, a 4x4 or high-clearance rental is the sensible choice.

Day trips unlock the island

Arikok National Park, the natural pool, the wind-battered north coast, and quiet beaches like Baby Beach are the reason to rent — many visitors grab a car for just a day or two. Compare rental options or browse all car-or-not verdicts.

FAQ

Can you get around Aruba without a car?

Along the resort strip and into Oranjestad, yes — the Arubus line and taxis handle it, and many resorts are walkable to the beach. It's reaching the wild north coast, Arikok park, and remote beaches where you need your own vehicle.

Do you need a 4x4 to explore Aruba?

For Arikok National Park's unpaved interior tracks and the natural pool, a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. A regular car is fine for the paved roads, beaches, and towns everywhere else on the island.
